Different Types Of Shower Enclosures

gallery Modern Bathroom with Frameless Glass Enclosure 7 - Shower Doors of Charlotte

When it comes to installing a new shower in your bathroom, there is a significant variation of enclosures that you have to choose from. It can be tough to choose an enclosure that works for the space you have, which is why you should carefully assess each option that is available. Here is a closer look at a couple of different shower enclosure options that you can find on the market.

Frameless Shower Enclosure

Frameless shower enclosures have become very popular in recent years. They do not utilize a traditional frame but rather fit directly onto the wall in front of your shower area. These enclosures often use glass as the primary material in their design and can help to increase the amount of space you have available in your shower. Additionally, they are also great for adding a modern touch to your bathroom’s aesthetic.

Sliding Shower Enclosure

If you are limited on space in the bathroom, then a sliding shower enclosure is a great choice. They do not have swinging doors but rather a single door that slides left and right. These shower enclosures also offer the aesthetics of glass and come in a wide variety of design options.

Square Shower Enclosure

People with less space to work with will opt for a square shower enclosure. The enclosure forms a perfect square on the floor, along with an elongated frame that helps to prevent water from splashing outside of the shower. These showers often use tiling at the bottom and can easily be added against existing wall tiles that you have in the bathroom. You can also choose to use a curtain instead of a door with this setup.

Curved Shower Enclosure

A curved shower enclosure has a very similar design to a square option – the major difference being the shape. Instead of a perfect square, the outer edge of the enclosure features a smooth curvature. This adds more options for choosing different types of doors, including sliding ones that can help to save space when you have a relatively small bathroom. Similar to square shower enclosures, a curved one will also fit into a corner in the area.

Walk-in Showers

Walk-in showers are quickly rising in popularity, and many people choose them due to the convenience they add. Careful planning is, however, required when you want to have an open-plan walk-in shower. You need to ensure the position of the faucet will not cause a mess all over the bathroom. These showers generally only have a minimalistic frame and sometimes contain no glass components that serve as a door and shield for the water.

Tips to Care For and Clean Your Shower Doors

BG Frameless Shower Doors - Shower Doors of Charlotte

When new shower doors are fitted, they appear clear and bright. However as time goes on, water stains will begin to appear and soap scum will accumulate which leads to foggy, discolored shower doors. This completely changes the look of your bathroom and if not properly taken care of, it can lead to further problems.

You’ll want to keep your brand-new shower doors as spotless as you can after making the investment. Shower doors that are clear and shiny for a longer time can be had with the right maintenance. Here are some tips for keeping your shower doors looking brand new:

Clean Your Shower After It’s Used

The easiest way to keep your shower doors clean is to wipe them down after every use. Soap scum that is left to dry on the door gets more and more difficult to remove. A quick wipe with a squeegee, however, is all that’s needed to remove water drops so they can’t turn into water stains.

For daily cleaning, you can use a homemade solution following this recipe:

  • ½ c rubbing alcohol
  • ½ c hydrogen peroxide
  • 1 T liquid dishwasher rinse agent
  • 1 t dishwashing liquid
  • 3 cups of water

Wipe the water drops away, then spritz the door with your solution. Wipe the door dry with a microfiber cloth and then you’re done!

Clean Shower Doors with Vinegar

As soap scum builds up, it gets harder to remove. However, the acid in a common household liquid does wonders for breaking through the grime.

All you have to do is heat 1 cup of distilled white vinegar for about 30 – 45 seconds in the microwave. Mix the vinegar with a few drops of dishwashing liquid in a spray bottle.

Spray the solution on the door and let it sit for at least 5 minutes. After that, start scrubbing with a sponge from the top down. Once it’s scrubbed nicely, rinse with water and use a microfiber cloth to dry the doors.

Warning: The acid in vinegar can damage natural stones like granite. If you have any type of natural stone embellishments near your shower, avoid using vinegar for cleaning.

Clean Shower Doors With Lemon Juice

Not a fan of the smell of vinegar? Lemon juice is a great alternative that leads to the same result.

As lemons are less acidic than vinegar, it may take you extra effort in order to clean your shower doors. In order to do this, mix a bit of lemon juice and warm water together in a spray bottle. After wiping away water droplets, spritz with the lemon juice solution and leave it to sit for at least five minutes.

Scrub with a sponge to remove built-up soap scum. It isn’t necessary to rinse the solution off the door – just simply dry the doors with your cloth when finished.

How to Remove Stubborn Water Stains

Though vinegar should remove most problems, stubborn water stains may still remain. To combat these, you can try making a paste of baking soda with either water or vinegar. It will take about ½ cup of baking soda to coat most shower doors.

Spread the paste on the door with a soft cloth and allow it to sit for about 20 minutes. Then rinse it off, scrubbing at the most stubborn areas.

How Often to Clean Shower Doors

How often to clean shower doors depends on how often you use your shower. As mentioned, you should do a quick wipe-down after every shower to prevent water droplet stains.

You should wash more thoroughly with vinegar or lemon juice about once a week for the typical shower. However, if you use your shower a lot or several people are using the shower, you may need to clean it more often.

Pros of Frameless Shower Doors

Glass to Glass Door Panel NP BN BM - Shower Doors of Charlotte

The bathroom is one of the most important rooms in a house.

In fact, did you know that the average person spends 813.3 days in the bathroom? That equates to more than two years of their life! As one of the most important parts of your home, you should invest time and money to make it look elegant and inviting.

One of the most cost-effective ways to give your bathroom a fresh new look is to install a frameless shower door. Frameless shower doors upgrade your shower into an elegant, minimalist space that offers a spa-like experience at home.

In this guide, we’ll focus on installing frameless shower doors and why they are preferable to framed shower doors. But first, let’s get down to the basics.

Framed vs. Frameless Shower Doors

While framed shower doors come with an aluminum frame around the interior edges, frameless shower doors are basically panels of tempered glass.

The superficial difference here is the absence of the metal support found in the framed shower doors. The metal tends to corrode, vinyl gaskets shrink and water ends up trapped in the framing which leads to mold & mildew growing in places you can’t clean. The framed showers also use thinner glass which is why the frame is important and provides structural stability to an otherwise flimsy glass. However, frameless shower enclosures use glass that is twice as thick and which eliminates the need for the metal framing. Most people opt for frameless showers owing to their simple and elegant nature and ease of maintenance. Their design aesthetics give your shower a modern and open look you’d expect in a contemporary home.

Framed showers are often referred to as basic builder grade enclosures that use adjustable overlapping metal jambs to account for out of square conditions and varying shower sizes. This means less precise fabrication is required

Advantages of Frameless Shower Doors

Frameless shower doors offer many advantages compared to framed doors, including:

Increased Space

If you’re considering upgrading to a frameless shower, you’ll be glad to know that remodeling will create extra space in your bathroom.

Once you eliminate the shower curtains or move on from your framed shower, the space used automatically feels bigger. This is particularly important if you have a small bathroom.

Visually Pleasing

Perhaps the most striking advantage of frameless doors is that they look amazing with a sleek and elegant design.

These doors have an upscale feel that gives you the vibe you feel in a luxurious hotel. Better still, they allow you to showcase the elegant tiling inside your shower, further enhancing the visual appeal of the space.

More Durable

Another thing to note about frameless shower doors is that they are extremely durable. The thicker glass is more rigid and eliminates the need for metal framing.

Easy to Clean

To many people, cleaning the bathroom is no fun but frameless showers are much easier to clean & maintain. First, there are amazing products available for frameless shower glass that can help keep your shower glass looking great! Products like ShowerGuard Glass and DiamonFusion create ultrasmooth glass surfaces which prevent soap scum from building up and greatly reduce the time it takes to clean & maintain.

Secondly, with a frameless shower door, you’ll never have to deal with mold & mildew build-up hidden inside the metal framing. Mold build-up is one of the major problems associated with framed shower doors.  Water seeps into the metal track around the vinyl gaskets and becomes trapped inside the metal frame where it grows rampant in the cozy warm shower environment.  The thicker glass of frameless showers eliminates the need for the metal track and eliminates the hiding spots that are impossible to clean.

Therefore, if mold is one of the bathroom issues that put you off, you should probably consider going for a frameless shower door.

Available in Various Styles

Finally, when remodeling your bathroom, you can choose from different styles, configurations, and sizes of frameless doors. Customization gives you the utmost satisfaction since you literally make the bathroom space your own. Each frameless shower is meticulously measured and fabricated for YOUR shower enclosure.

The added flexibility also makes it easier to change things up whenever you want to and work within your preferred budget. There are no standards to limit your design options!

Install a Frameless Shower Door

If you’re considering going for a frameless shower doors, you have much to gain. The main advantages of frameless shower doors include the ability to create extra space in the bathroom, the design aesthetics, the durability associated with tempered glass, the ease of cleaning, and availability in different styles, configurations, and sizes.

Frameless shower doors are made of 3/8” or 1/2” thick tempered glass panels that eliminate the need for the metal support found in framed shower doors. This gives your shower a luxurious and sophisticated look! Ready to install your frameless shower door? When Is It Time to Remodel or Replace Your Shower?

Did you know that an outdated bathroom is among the top reasons homebuyers avoid purchasing a home? Even if you do not plan on selling your home for several years, have you considered the difference a bathroom remodel could make for your own personal happiness?

In fact, in 2020, a majority of U.S. homeowners renovated their bathrooms to improve their own living conditions! Almost half changed the overall layout of their master bathroom, and 33% renovated their bathrooms simply because they “could no longer stand them.”

One of the most common (and satisfying!) ways to improve your bathroom is a beautiful, walk-in shower

But, if you need proof that a new shower is truly the answer, consider the following reasons it might be time to remodel or replace your shower

  1. Leaky & Underperforming Fixtures
  2. Tight Spaces & Difficult Access
  3. Inconvenient, Hazardous Shower Design
  4. Chipped Tile or Damaged Shower Walls

Shower Doors of Charlotte creates frameless shower doors and glass enclosures that are sleek and luxurious. Contact us and request a free quote about custom shower doors and designs!

Leaky & Under-Performing Fixtures

A leaky shower fixture or less-than-ideal water pressure may not be a bathroom emergency, but this is your “me time” we are talking about! On the other hand, such quirks in your guest bathroom are not exactly communicating a warm welcome to your friends or family members.

Plus, replacing your fixtures or your shower altogether is worth it – literally. A leaking fixture could be costing you money on your water bill every month or, worse, causing water damage to your home, which could lead to dangerous mold growth.

Tight Spaces & Difficult Access

Bathrooms should be anything but tight spaces, and yet too many bathrooms that do not make efficient use of their square footage can feel claustrophobic. Even though a tub-and-shower combination might seem like the best use of space if you cannot fit both in the bathroom, the truth is that shower tubs can be bulky both physically and visually, as well as difficult to climb-in.

In contrast, think of how a glass, walk-in shower immediately opens-up space in your bathroom; rather than creating separation with a shower curtain or door, a glass door creates depth by drawing your eyes further-in. Additionally, a walk-in shower makes the space easier – and safer – to access!

Inconvenient, Hazardous Shower Design

On a similar note, whether your bathroom was built in recent years or decades ago, shower designs are not always built with practicality in-mind. Sometimes, this is simply due to different homeowners’ needs and preferences. Other times, a poor shower design can be attributed to a small bathroom space or dwindling budget.

Whether it is your shower’s size, lack of a bench or seat, or its irritating location in the bathroom, all are inconveniences that could turn into slip-and-fall situations or other accidents. For example, a swinging shower door that bumps into another fixture – such as a toilet or bathtub – is particularly unsafe because the glass could easily break if the door swung too quickly.

Chipped Tile or Damaged Shower Walls

Every shower is prone to wear and tear, but that doesn’t make it any less disappointing when you discover a chip in the tile, a dent in the shower wall, or peeling caulk. And rather than writing off the damage as something you can live with, you will need to assess these aging shower symptoms for more serious reasons.

Broken, chipped, or damaged shower tiles can actually be a safety hazard. For one, you could easily cut yourself, but water could also seep through the cracks and cause mold growth, which is a risk to your health. Similarly, damaged shower walls and peeling caulk trap moisture, which can cause mold, mildew, and even wood rot.

Choosing the Right Mirror for Your Bathroom

Without a mirror, your bathroom is incomplete. They’re essential for everyday activities such as doing your makeup and checking your outfit. However, choosing a mirror for your bathroom is not always easy. There are so many different options for picking the perfect mirror, but asking yourself these five questions will help you find the right one!

Which Mirrors Fit The Budget?

First things first, you have to plan for your budget, which typically includes the cost of the mirror plus any installation costs. What is the most you’re willing to spend on your mirror? Where do you have flexibility? When it comes to browsing prices, what do you want to prioritize?

You should have the answer to all these questions before moving forward with a new bathroom mirror. It will help narrow down your search and make the process easier to manage.

What Type of Mirror Do You Need?

The ideal mirror for you is based on what you use your bathroom for. Usually, that means fixing your appearance and doing daily tasks like brushing your teeth or doing a skincare routine. Four of the most common types of bathroom mirrors are:

  • Floor Mirrors – Additionally popular for bedrooms, floor mirrors will give you a full-view of your outfit choice of the day, making it easier to accessorize.
  • Wall Mirrors – These are the most common type of bathroom mirrors due to the convenience of being mounted directly to the wall.
  • Cabinet Mirrors – A perfect combination of storage and viewing, cabinet mirrors add a bit of charm to your bathroom. Due to their compact style, they don’t take up as much space.
  • Pivot Mirrors – These mirrors are secured to the wall with a swivel rod, letting you adjust the mirror, and even move it, depending on the time of day and lighting conditions.

At Shower Doors of Charlotte, we provide and install a variety of bathroom mirrors including vanity mirrors and mirror walls in Charlotte, NC!

What Shape and Size of Mirror Do You Want?

The shape of your mirror can be determined by the space of your bathroom and your personal design aesthetic. In fact, choosing the right mirror could create space where there currently is none by toning up the brightness and adding depth and height to shallow spaces.

In order to determine the correct mirror size (and shape) for your bathroom, you should consider both the vanity and the countertop. Typically, you’ll want a mirror that’s a few inches shorter than the overall countertop width.

How Much Light Will The Mirror Receive?

Don’t underestimate how important light can be when it comes to choosing a bathroom mirror. For example, if you are going to be doing your makeup, then you will need a more detailed mirror, possibly one that comes with built-in LED lights. If you have a window in your bathroom, consider a pivot mirror to move around when the sun shines through so you don’t have a glare.

What is Your Personal Style?

For years, bathrooms have been criticized for being dull and boring. But, with the right mirror style, all that can change! Your bathroom mirror is one of the easiest and most affordable ways to make a statement about you and your bathroom’s personal style.

Do you prefer a minimalist aesthetic, or maybe a modern setting? Consider your vision then choose a mirror with the right frame, shape, size, and durability that best suits your idea.
